Toledo District
We take you into an experience with East Indians and Kekchi Mayas that make up most of the population in this southern part of the Country.
Although Belize is in the heartland of what used to be the Mayan Empire, the current descendants that live there now mostly came from Mexico and Guatemala. Most of the original Mayan inhabitants were victims of plagues or armed conflict. Today, three groups are represented, the Yucatec Maya who came from Yucatan Mexico, The Mopan who came from Peten area of Guatemala, and the kekchi who migrated from Verapaz region Guatemala.
Toledo District is mostly where the Kekchi and Mopan Dwell. They together comprise the largest percentage of Mayan descendants in Belize today and have remained the most traditional and culturally distinct.
Join in on an experience into preparing healthy East Indian dishes using all local spices and locally grown herbs. Followed by a tour into The Kekchi Mayas everyday way of living. Experience their food, including locally grown chocolate and coffee, learn their dances and agriculture practices as well as gain firsthand information on natural remedies.
